Beginners Courses

Beginner classes

Beginner classes in full flow

Archery has historically been used for hunting and combat; in modern times, however, its main use is that of a recreational activity. While there are several forms of archery, such as “Field”, “Clout”, and “Hunting”, the most popular form is “Target Archery”, and that is what we do. This involves shooting arrows, and as you may have guessed, we aim at a target.

People of all ages and abilities practice target archery,  there is no strength requirement as we have bows for 7 year olds and equally for 77 year olds.

Archery is not really a competitive sport although it can be if you choose,  mostly you compete with yourself.  You may choose to join a team and shoot against others, but ultimately, the purpose is to have a good time.

Our beginners course provides tuition for beginners, both from our qualified coaches and the experience of our skilled archers. You will be taught the proper technique for shooting and how to use archery equipment correctly and safely by expert club coaches and members.

All the equipment you will need is provided to get you started, from a bow and target down to a bracer or tab. You will be taught basic shooting techniques while shooting at targets at a distance of 20 yards using a recurve bow.

You will also be given advice on what kit is suitable for you to purchase when you complete your training, but you are free to use the bow you learnt with for as long as you feel necessary. Our members can provide valuable experience and knowledge when it comes to bow selection, but at the end of the day, it will be your choice, as a bow has to be correct for you and your measurements.

It is strongly recommended that you do not buy any equipment before you start, as it can be both a waste of money and even physically damaging. Please get in touch and speak to one of our archers before purchasing any kit.

Beginner Courses

We host beginner classes a couple of times a year.

Our Beginners courses are provided at a minimal cost because we want archery to be accessible to anyone who wants to pick up a bow.

Cost: £85 for 2024-2025 when done outside at the field

Cost: £95 for 2024-2025 when done inside as we have to rent the hall  (not always available)

The club will provide any and all equipment needed for the course – you will not be allowed to use your own equipment. Our courses are run over three sessions each 4 hours long, and you will need to complete all three sessions of supervised shooting. This then qualifies you to become a member of our (or any other UK Archery GB ) club. Follow us on Facebook to stay informed about future courses.

NEXT COURSE:  Please see our Home page under  ‘Latest news

The next beginners course will normally take place over three weekends on Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm.
You will need to attend each afternoon. At the end of the course you will be able to join our club or join any other Archery GB affiliated club.
As a beginners course is a pre-requisite in order to join a club, this is the perfect opportunity to get ready for the summer season.
